Internet Providers vs Infrastructure Providers

Various Internet service providers, Internet infrastructure, mobile providers are a kind of a puzzle that recedes infinitely.
The Internet situation in Israel is similar to a puzzle. In Israel various vendors become the partners of your data secrets: the infrastructure provider, the Internet service provider, the mobile Internet provider. Most carriers are unclear about who their service really is for.

In case problems appear it is hard to figure out who is responsible as one always gets directed to the second supplier. So how can you get to know who is really responsible?

What is an infrastructure provider?

An Internet infrastructure provider is a company that placed the cable which comes out of the house and connects your home network to the Internet. Israel has two Internet infrastructure providers ̶ Bezeq and Hot, who will soon be joined by a third Internet infrastructure provider ̶- the electric company.

The Internet infrastructure providers are responsible for the cables and ensure that the cables which allow the data transfer are working. Infrastructure suppliers are selling bandwidth: the speed with which the data is downloaded from the Internet (for example, to watch movies or download TV shows and songs) and the speed that data is uploaded to the Internet (for example: multiplayer games online or uploading to YouTube). The upload and download speeds of data are not identical with Hot and Bezeq. With them the download speed is much faster than the speed of uploading data. The electric company will design the infrastructure of the speed of downloading and uploading data to be identical.

So what is an Internet provider?

An Internet provider is a company that provides access to the Internet. Access to the Internet is done through special servers that connect between them. To access any site on the Internet, a type of account on a server (or server farm) has to be created that connects to the Web servers. Internet service providers strengthen their server farms that are designed to provide Internet access to people who buy these services from them.

Typically, Internet service providers also provide network access to other services such as e-mail, hosting services, software services and virus or spam protection. In Israel there are many Internet service providers operating: 012 Smile, Bezeq International 013, Netvision, Orange, XFone, Rimon, Barack and more.

And what is a mobile Internet provider?

A mobile Internet provider is an Internet provider that allows access to the Internet via a cell phone. Many known cell phone companies offer this service and the payment is done by acquiring certain Internet packages of the mobile phone company.

If there is a problem browsing at home, how do you know who to approach?

  • If there is a problem browsing at home, the problem may be caused by several different sources:
  • The computer itself.
  • The connection between the computer and the home network router.
  • The infrastructure that connects the home network router and Internet Service Provider. The Internet Service Provider.
  • The website has issues.

To gain efficiency in treating the problem that’s occurring, one needs to contact the appropriate person to solve it. One should isolate and understand the source of the problem:

1. If you have a problem with your browsing speed at only one computer, and the computer is connected directly to the router via cable, then the problem is the computer itself. You should try to remove any viruses from your computer, and if this doesn’t help, call a computer technician.

2. If there is a problem with only one computer at home (and no other computers), and the computer is not connected to the router via cable ̶- the problem can be the wireless connection of the computer, or security settings/connection from the router. This computer should be rebooted. Also check that the wireless card connects to the router.

3. If there is a problem to access a particular website but no problem to access others, then the problem is based in a website. You can try to contact the site administrator, or go to a competitor.

4. If the problem occurs on all websites and all computers at home, the problem is the infrastructure or the Internet provider. There are tests that will allow you to see where exactly the problem is based. The first possible step and desirable approach is to contact the provider. If it is Bezeq, they may also give support if the issue is not related to infrastructure and they might hold a conference call with you.

There are online programs that allow you to run a simple test to discover what your real home surfing speed is. If the connection speed is not compatible with this, the problem is the Internet service provider or infrastructure. The infrastructure provider needs to check what your allotted bandwidth is and make sure that the Internet service provider’s settings are compatible with the Web servers’ support and the browsing speed that was promised to you.
