MacBook Screen Repair or Replacement

If you have landed on this page, then most likely you need to replace or repair your MacBook screen.

Here, I will try to cover the most common breakdowns and their solutions, mainly related to MacBook screen repair or replacement. Since many of you are just looking for a shop or someone who can repair a MacBook screen

and are not interested in understanding how it works, I will be very brief and tell you what can be repaired or what will need to be replaced.

The screen of any Macintosh laptop works on approximately the same principle as any other laptop screen and consists of similar main components – this is the backlight and the LCD (Liquid-Crystal display) itself, between which there are several “filter sheets” that let certain rays of light through and evenly distribute them to the LCD display. All this is housed in an aluminum case, along with a webcam and a light sensor, and is connected to the motherboard (which is located in the base of the MacBook) using T-Con (electronic board from LCD) and several flexible cables, which, by the way, very often deteriorate.

So, most of the malfunctions regarding displays of MacBooks can be attributed to three components:

  1. Backlight. If the backlight stops working, then the image seems absent, in fact it is there, but it is just not visible, and if you shine a flashlight on the MacBook screen, you can see a barely noticeable picture. Sometimes the MacBook’s backlight will partially stop working and then various kinds of symptoms will appear, for example, such as “glowing spotlights” at the bottom of the screen. This is mostly due to a faulty flat cable (or flex cable) that connects the MacBook to the LED bar inside the screen. When you open the screen all the way up, this cable stretches and breaks over time, which is especially true for MacBooks since 2016.
  2. Liquid Crystal Display. The LCD display may not work at all, work partially, or even physically break or crack. If it does not work at all, and the backlight lights up, then naturally there will be no image on the screen, only a dim, barely noticeable glow. Sometimes the MacBook LCD works but with symptoms such as screen flickering, multi-colored lines, or a wide black bar, or only 2/3 of the screen works and so on. Sometimes the LCD screen just cracks when the computer falls, or when the lid is closed on some object that was left inside by negligence. In this case, only the matrix can be changed or the entire “display assembly” needs to be replaced. There are some nuances associated with this, but more on that later.
  3. Camera, sensors, filters, case. Cameras and sensors may also stop working due to a faulty flat cable, a malfunction in the device itself, or the electronics associated with the camera or sensors. Liquid can get into the filter sheets between the LCD and the backlight and then create stains that look like traces of water.

Usually, in any of the cases above, the display can be replaced by a completely assembled new display. Such screens are assembled at a factory and thoroughly glued so that they are beyond repair, and replacing them with the “original” already assembled screen will undoubtedly hit the pocket hard.

In China, you can buy already assembled screens, but just so you know, most of these screens are not original and not of high-quality assembly. From personal experience, 50% of such purchased screens from China had various problems, such as:

  • Weak brightness
  • Dim or unclear picture
  • Camera does not work or focus
  • Light sensor does not work
  • Illumination is not even
  • Greenish background
  • The hinges are weak and the screen does not hold in place.
  • The rubber gasket near the hinges “chewed” when closing and opening the display
  • Flickering image
  • Lines appear at the top or bottom of the screen
  • Spotlights appear at the bottom of the screen

And these are not all problems … They may not show up immediately, but after some time, for example, in a month or two.

Disassembling such “Chinese” MacBook screens and seeing the poor build quality, I decided not to buy Chinese ready-made screens anymore, but to buy only original Apple-assembled screens, which are much more expensive, or only the LCD matrix that I can install and assemble myself in the original back cover (aluminum screen body).

MacBook screen repair is quite complex and requires certain skills, experience, and patience. If done “right,” the screen will remain “original” at a price much lower than a new one and much better in quality than a Chinese one, which will last for a long time.

Let’s try to highlight the most common screen malfunctions.

Symptoms of a Failed MacBook Screen

  • Screen won’t turn on but MacBook works
  • There is a noticeably faint backlight glow, but the image is missing
  • The screen flickers completely or partially
  • At the bottom of the display are illuminated spotlights
  • MacBook screen brightness is very weak
  • The screen goes black at a certain display angle
  • Stripes or distortion appear when moving a display
  • Wide black or flickering stripe from top to bottom
  • Image disappears after a while
  • The LCD is cracked in some part of it, the image is completely or partially missing
  • The display is hard to close or vice versa does not hold
  • Water got inside the screen and left water stains
  • Scratched or peeling anti-glare on the MacBook screen
  • MacBook works but the screen won’t turn on after water damage
  • The display camera sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t

Sometimes it is difficult to understand where the problem is – in the display or the MacBook itself. Connecting an external screen or temporarily connecting a known-good MacBook display (the same model) will help to find out.

MacBook screen repair or replacement

  • MacBook LCD flex cable repair or replacement
  • Replacing a Broken LCD
  • Replacement MacBook Screen Assembly
  • MacBook backlight flex cable repair
  • T-CON Replacement or Repair
  • Replacing connectors on a T-CON
  • Screen corrosion cleaning after water damage
  • Replacing backlight sheets
  • Replacement or repair of MacBook screen hinges
  • MacBook webcam repair or replacement

These are not all breakdowns; other malfunctions can be considered individually.

MacBook Screen Repair Prices

MacBook screen repair rates vary from model to model and the type of repair that needs to be done. Since MacBook screen repair requires a lot of time and skills, the prices are not low, but much lower than buying a new MacBook.

There are already ready-made new or second-hand screens at cheaper prices.

If you already have a purchased screen and you just need to install it, then this service costs 250 NIS.

It is best if you describe the problem and send a photo or a short video of the malfunction to my WhatsApp, and I will respond immediately.

Also contact me if you do not know what the problem is, and I will answer and help as much as possible.
