A key has fallen off, keys type twice, keys are sticky, the mechanism under a key is broken, or the keyboard stopped responding altogether \u2014 in most cases this is fixable, and far cheaper than what an authorized service will offer you.<\/p>\n

MacBook keyboard repair is almost always possible when the problem is mechanical: a key came off, doesn’t press properly, or keys type twice or three times per press. But sometimes the keyboard is damaged beyond repair, and then a full MacBook keyboard replacement is needed. Which of the two applies to you \u2014 the inspection will show, and it’s free.<\/p>\n

Why MacBook keyboard repair beats a top case replacement<\/h2>\n

Since the end of 2012, the keyboards in all MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models have been fixed to the case with aluminum rivets. Apple never planned for the keyboard alone to be replaced, so an authorized workshop will replace the entire top case (topcase) \u2014 together with the trackpad, battery, speakers and everything else mounted on it. The price is accordingly high: a MacBook top case replacement costs about half a used MacBook.<\/p>\n

If your MacBook is still under active warranty, by all means go to Apple. But the free butterfly keyboard replacement program has already ended, and waiting for a top case swap here in Israel takes two to three weeks, often longer. Meanwhile most keyboard faults are solved by a repair \u2014 often for very little money, and sometimes free of charge, right in front of you.<\/p>\n

To be honest with you: a MacBook keyboard replacement is long, painstaking work that takes experience and patience. That’s exactly why I first check whether a repair will do the job.<\/p>\n

Butterfly and scissor mechanisms \u2014 what’s the difference<\/h2>\n

MacBooks from 2015 to 2019 use the butterfly mechanism: flat, fragile and sensitive to dust \u2014 it’s the reason keys type twice or stop pressing at all. Models before 2015 and the newer ones from 2020 onward use the scissor mechanism, which is more reliable and far easier to repair. You can tell which one you have by the model year, but the actual condition of the mechanism shows only once a keycap is removed \u2014 which is part of my diagnostics.<\/p>\n
