Here the clock runs in minutes: what you do first decides whether the repair costs a few hundred shekels or the price of a new logic board.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What to do first if you spilled water on a laptop<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Shut it down immediately.<\/strong> Not through the menu \u2014 hold the power button for 10 seconds until the computer goes dark.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disconnect power and battery.<\/strong> Unplug the charger. If the battery is removable, take it out. If it&#8217;s internal and you have a screwdriver and some experience, open the bottom cover and disconnect the battery cable. Not sure \u2014 don&#8217;t go in, just don&#8217;t turn the computer on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tent it<\/strong> \u2014 place it upside down, screen and keyboard facing down, so the liquid drains out instead of running deeper onto the board.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring it to the workshop immediately.<\/strong> Not &#8220;when I have time&#8221;, not tomorrow \u2014 today. The sooner it&#8217;s opened and cleaned, the cheaper the repair.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Disconnecting the battery and the diagnostics are free. If you&#8217;re nearby, just bring it in; if you&#8217;re far, call me and I&#8217;ll tell you what to do before you get here.<\/p>\n<h2>What you must not do<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t turn it on &#8220;just to check if it works&#8221;.<\/strong> This is the main mistake people make when they&#8217;ve spilled water on a laptop: water plus current, and corrosion starts within minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t use a hair dryer.<\/strong> You can&#8217;t dry a laptop from the outside \u2014 the liquid is already inside, under the board and under the keyboard, and blowing air over the case won&#8217;t reach it. What hot air will do is melt the keycaps and the plastic. And most importantly, you lose the time you don&#8217;t have.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t put it in rice.<\/strong> Rice does nothing: it doesn&#8217;t pull liquid out from under the components, while you lose a whole day during which the board oxidizes. What it does do is get grains inside and outside \u2014 under the keys, into the ports, between the screen and the case, where a single grain will scratch or crack the display when you close the lid. Whatever the internet says \u2014 rice does not work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t put it on a radiator, in an oven, or in the sun.<\/strong> While the computer heats up, the battery inside is still connected and still feeding the wet board \u2014 corrosion keeps going. On top of that, heat damages and swells the battery itself, melts plastic, and the time is wasted anyway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t wait and hope it turned out fine.<\/strong> The laptop may keep working for a while \u2014 and then die for good.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why laptop liquid damage is worse than it looks<\/h2>\n<p>Water on the board plus electrical current means electrochemical corrosion starts instantly \u2014 the most destructive process there is for electronics. You can see the result within minutes: traces and chip legs literally begin to dissolve.<\/p>\n<p>The trap is that a laptop with liquid damage often keeps working. Someone who spilled water on a laptop relaxes after it boots up and carries on using it \u2014 while corrosion quietly eats the board from the inside. The strange behaviour usually starts the same day or the next, sometimes after a few days. And instead of a simple corrosion cleaning, what lands on my bench is a board that costs more to restore than it&#8217;s worth.<\/p>\n<p>Clean water is the mildest case here: it evaporates and leaves almost nothing behind. If you spilled coffee on a laptop with sugar in it, or cola, juice, wine or beer, they leave a sticky residue that doesn&#8217;t go away once it dries \u2014 that&#8217;s why keys get sticky and stop pressing \u2014 and the acids in sodas and juices eat into the metal. The worst of all is salt water: salt both conducts current and destroys everything it touches.<\/p>\n<h2>What happens after you spilled coffee on a laptop<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Instant shutdown<\/strong> \u2014 the liquid shorted the power circuits<\/li>\n<li><strong>Short circuits<\/strong> and failure of the board&#8217;s power rails<\/li>\n<li><strong>Corrosion<\/strong> of traces, connectors and chips \u2014 it continues even after everything dries<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/en\/macbook-keyboard-repair-or-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keys stick, don&#8217;t work, or type by themselves<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The trackpad doesn&#8217;t respond or the cursor moves on its own<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/en\/macbook-screen-repair-or-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stains under the screen, lines, dead pixels<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The laptop won&#8217;t charge or doesn&#8217;t see the charger<\/li>\n<li>No sound, distorted speakers, microphone not working<\/li>\n<li>USB, USB-C and HDMI ports corroded and losing contact<\/li>\n<li>The computer boots every other time, or won&#8217;t boot at all<\/li>\n<li>The drive isn&#8217;t detected \u2014 up to full data loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How I repair a laptop after liquid damage<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Disassembly and inspection under a microscope.<\/strong> I check exactly how far the liquid travelled and what has already oxidized.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ultrasonic cleaning of the board.<\/strong> The board goes into an ultrasonic bath, where ultrasound removes corrosion and oxides in the places you physically cannot reach: under the chips, under the shields, inside the connectors. The keyboard is washed at the same time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drying.<\/strong> Right after washing, the board and the keyboard are dried \u2014 this takes many hours and cannot be rushed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repairing what&#8217;s left.<\/strong> I clean off whatever the bath didn&#8217;t take, restore eaten-through traces and replace damaged components \u2014 <a href=\"\/en\/laptop-motherboard-repair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">component-level logic board repair<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assembly and testing.<\/strong> The assembled computer runs under load, so I know it works reliably \u2014 not just &#8220;it turns on for now&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After washing and drying, the keyboard often keeps working normally \u2014 if it doesn&#8217;t, I <a href=\"\/en\/macbook-keyboard-repair-or-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">repair or replace the keyboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I handle laptop liquid damage on any brand, as well as <a href=\"\/en\/macbook-repair\/\">MacBook Pro and MacBook Air of all models<\/a> \u2014 with MacBooks the experience is especially deep, including cases an authorized service writes off as a full board replacement.<\/p>\n<h2>How much does liquid damage repair cost<\/h2>\n<p>Disconnecting the battery and the diagnostics are free. After that the price depends on the model and on how far the corrosion has gone: cleaning a board straight away, while the oxidation has only started, is one job \u2014 restoring it a week or a month later is another one entirely.<\/p>\n<p>So the rule is simple: <strong>the sooner you bring it in, the cheaper it will be<\/strong> \u2014 an early corrosion cleaning costs a fraction of a late board restoration.
